Papadosio One year, while attending Bear Creek Music & Arts Festival (this year’s is Nov. 13-16 at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park), I overheard some heady campground dwellers discussing Papadosio outside my tent. “It’s, ‘pop-a-dose, yo,’” one explained to the other. “Get it? Like, a dose of LSD, brah.” And said other, possibly already tweaked on some good paper himself, replied (I shit you not), “Dude, that’s, like …woahhhhhhh.” The electro-psychedelic improv rock band from Asheville backs a just-released album, Night & Day, a collection of unreleased tracks recorded live from a cabin in the Appalachian mountains. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
Fortunate Youth with The Steppas, Ashes of Babylon, Ease Up South Bay LA-area sextet Fortunate Youth mixes swaying roots reggae with dub reverberations, heavy keyboard grooves, multi-part vocal harmonies and generally uplifting lyrical content. Sophomore full length It’s All a Jam peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Reggae charts last year and the sextet hits the road in support with some like-sounding acts as part of their “Fall with Friends Tour.” (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)
Flat Stanley, Y Los Dos Pistoles, Jeff Brawer A triple header of high quality local indie rock – the raw and explosive Buck Sands-led Flat Stanley; garage-pop fizzing folk-rock swaying Y Los Dos Pistoles, their sound driven by the honey-whiskey-soaked vocals and occasional turns on harmonica by Shae Krispinsky; and a solo acoustic-powered set by guitarist/singer Jeff Brawer, frontman of punk staple Dukes of Hillsborough. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
