As a teenager, I rocked the hell out of The Offspring’s 1994 third album Smash, especially “Bad Habit,” which schooled me on road rage before I knew how to drive and stoked my angsty brow-furrowed attitude. I saw them later, in ’01, when the SoCal skate punk-howling alt rock foursome hit the 98Rock Livestock stage, and man, did I ever have fun, though all I really recall is bright eye-popping bursts of lights, obese back-up dancers in shiny silver dresses, and frontman Dexter Holland spazzing out all over the stage like the force-of-nature frontman he’s known to be.
The Offspring plays Smash in its entirety on the Epitaph Records-sponsored “Summer Nationals Tour,” in honor of the LP’s 20th anniversary as well as other tracks from their repertoire. Also performing are a few labelmates and fellow Californians, both propulsive punk/melodic hardcore acts: Bad Religion – fresh off the success of a 16th studio LP, True North– and Pennywise, backing a brand new 11th full-length, Yesterdays. Ireland punk band Stiff Little Fingers kick off the night's music. 6:30 p.m., MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa, $20-$51.
