A look at a few noteworthy concerts happening this Tue., Oct. 20

Free Pizza with Part Time Models, Poster Every time I see the invite for this show, I think, ‘Damn, I wish I was still eating pizza.’ I start fantasizing about pepperoni. My mouth waters. I guess I could read it more like “Free Pizza!”– not a pro gratis slice, but, like, hey – get that damn pizza out of prison! Guess I should ask the Boston area trio that adopted the name, though “Freedom Pizza”– the first track off 2014 album BOSTON, MA– kind of explains it. Free Pizza makes loose, jangly sounds with lo-fi grit and hints of surf they’ve self-dubbed “baby punk,” and are joined by a few local acts with rock-out tendencies for this free Tuesday night bill. (The Bends, St. Petersburg)

The Grass Is Dead It’s a bluegrass band that plays Grateful Dead covers – get it? Nothing too staggering here, since the Dead’s music is rooted in country, folk and Americana. But the spry pickin’ quintet from South Florida has offered fine re-imaginings of songs by their favored band since 1998 as driven by the multi-string talents of Billy Gilmore (banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar, dobro, pedal steel). The Grass Is Dead has three albums to their credit and this current tour following the Dead’s 50th anniversary farewell shows finds them prepping for a debut live release. (Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa)
