The Arcs, "Outta My Mind" live
Dan Auerbach's new side project finds him teaming with Leon Michels, Richard Swift, Homer Steinweiss, and Nick Movshon; their debut outing, Yours, Dreamily, drops this Fri., Sept. 4, via Nonesuch. The video for the slow grooving fuzz of "Put a Flower in My Pocket" premiered a few weeks back and was promptly followed by this live performance of "Outta My Mind" at The Village recording studio in LA. Auerbach's finely-wrought blues-soaked garage rock is intact with added soul, organ drama, and female vocals accompanying Auerbach's own deliciously smoky intones. [Full album stream here.]
Tijuana Panthers, "Set Forth" video
The experimental garage pop outfit from LA debuted this stop-motion claymation video for the track "Set Forth," on Pee-Wee Herman's My Log. The inspiration was the old Penny cartoons. According to band drummer Phil Shaheen, “We grew up on a Saturday in the 1980’s with our babysitter H.R. Pufnstuf and our pal Gumby, who once fell through tube during the Land of the Lost theme song. Gumby made it out alright but the blockheads that followed weren’t so lucky. A girl named Penny would visit us in the playhouse…Chad would sit on Chairy, Daniel would wrestle with Randy & I would listen to Cowboy Curtis go on and on about Miss Yvonne. We were homeschooled by Mr. Herman on how to view the world around us and more importantly, how to interact with it. Pee-wee told us to “Set Forth,” so we did and into the woods we ran…found our own paths, with our own friendly creatures, and together we keep bopping along down that crazy surrealist bucket. ” New album POSTER is available now via Innovative Leisure.
Fort Lean, "Might've Misheard"
This Brooklyn-based quintet is dropping their debut of lightly '80s-hued electro-rock with moments of charming sparkle, Quiet Day, on October 2 via Ooh La La Records."Might've Misheard" is washed in synths and carried on urgent driving tempos.
Western Science, "See What You Want To" video
It's another stop-motion video, sans animation, from indie rock duo Western Scene (Tom Pritchard and Emily Wilder). This song just makes me happy with its tinkling sonics and odd embellishments and exuberantly cheerful vocals paired with hand-claps and hoots. The video was shot entirely on an iPhone 6 and features handcrafted wooden characters built in the duo's woodshop in South Central LA. The song appears on their forthcoming EP, release date TBA.
Speedy Ortiz, "Hanging Around"
And now for a pleasant cover of a Cardigans tune from everybody's favorite Sadie Dupuis-led indie rock/noise pop outfit
