Take a look at some shows happening this Fri., Aug. 28...
Miracles of Modern Science Blending near-cheesy synth-pop breeziness, sophisticated chamber pop arrangements, and experimental art rock finesse with surprisingly cheeky lyrics comes Miracles of Modern Science (or MOMS), out of Brooklyn. The lead singer has a tuneful tenor and plucks double bass, his bandmates support on picked, plucked, bowed and strummed mandolin, violin and cello as bolstered by a tight tempo-changing drummer, and stirring multi-voice harmonies and choruses add oomph and color to songs like “Follow Your Heart (Or Something),”“Never Knew Normal” and “Please Don’t Feed the Party Animal,” all three off just-released full-length Mean Dreams. (Sacred Grounds Coffeehouse, Tampa)
BulletBoys with Demented Truth, Vain Rachel, Xployt, Kalus Formed at the peak of LA’s ‘80s-era glam metal movement by ex-members of King Kobra and Ratt, BulletBoys had a heavier hard rock sound and veritable lack of power balladry that likely worked against their chart success when they were coming up, not to mention lots of lineup changes following the release of their 1988 self-titled debut. Currently, singer-lead guitarist Marq Torien remains the only original member, piloting the band through albums like eighth and latest, Elefanté, and the subsequent support tours. (Brass Mug, Tampa)
The Defiant with Cold-Clock Knockout, The Harvest, The Proper Crooks, Abortion Twins, Above All Acts This Friday lineup of heavy sounds is headed up by St. Pete-based quartet The Defiant, their Southern grooving punk-metal full of chunky riffs, pounding beats and a vocalist whose gravelly roars spout lyric steeped in patriotism (sample verses from “Infidel”: “Forget those boys in blue, we need those boys in green / I’m back, motherfuckers, you see me smile, I’ll hear you scream / You’re dying here and you know you’re outta gas / I’ll raise my flag and stick the pole straight up your ass”). Seminole three-piece Cold-Clock Knockout proves a shredding highlight of alt metal. First set kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with The Defiant hitting the stage at 11:15 p.m. (Local 662, St. Petersburg)
The 3rd Kind This newly-minted instrumental funk-jazz trio with jammy tendencies is composed of guitarist/bassist Jordan Garno, keysman Bryan Lewis, and drummer Adam Volpe. At their first official gig as T3K, expect to hear “new twists on some of your favorite songs, as well as obscure covers that might become new favorites.” (Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café, Tampa)
Hillbilly Death Match: An Evening with Rev. Billy C. Wirtz and Ronny Elliott Two of the Bay area’s favorite long-running purveyors of raw (and often rollicking) Americana music enter; presumably, they’ll both physically leave, but let’s enjoy the implied violence of the theme, shall we? Honky-tonker Wirtz and strumming bard Elliott engage in musical fisticuffs, and no matter who “loses,” the audience wins. (Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg) —Scott Harrell
Thomas & Olivia Wynn Album Release with Andy Brey & Friends Thomas and Olivia Wynn – the soulfully harmonizing siblings who lead rousing roots rock ensemble Thomas Wynn and the Believers – perform material off a fresh seven-song release, Born Ready, as a duo, in an unplugged format before the full Orlando band launches a tour to New Orleans.
