Donavon Frankenreiter with Cody Simpson Donavon Frankenreiter seems like one cool dude. On top of maintaining a rather fine-looking mustache, the Hawaii-based singer-songwriter juggles family, surfing and music with laid-back ease, even launching a contest in May where he gave away a GoPro camera every day while live-streaming videos that documented his studio sessions as he recorded his new album in what he dubbed “10 straight days of streamin’& strummin’.” It proved an efficient and effective experiment; the entirety of The Heart was completed in this manner, and came out August 4. His sixth full-length and second with co-writer Grant-Lee Phillips proves more earnest and sentimental than past material, its heart theme spurred in part by his father, who was battling leukemia during its making and died a few weeks after its completion. Warming the stage on this tour is Aussie songsmith Cody Simpson, who has a sweet high-toned croon and breezy sunshine-drenched acoustic rock sound dosed healthily in island sonic hues.
