Jill Scott with BJ the Chicago Kid The Roots, Erykah Badu and Eve are the names at the forefront of 1999’s R&B-hued hit single “You Got Me,” but Jill Scott was the track’s behind-the-scenes co-writer and original vocalist before it was re-recorded with the higher profile Badu per the label’s request. The track eventually won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance, Scott went on to become just as relevant as Badu and nabbed her second Grammy win for her Billy Holiday collaboration with George Benson and Al Jarreau, “God Bless The Child” (Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance). Amid other notable collabs with Will Smith, Common and Young Jeezy, the Philly actress, poet and songstress produces her own music blending neo-soul, R&B, hip hop, jazz and spoken word, and has five studio albums to her credit. The latest, Woman – which dropped in June and fuels the current tour – has a funky bumpin’ first single “Fool’s Gold,” that finds Scott lamenting over giving her heart to the wrong man. She’ll play select cuts off Woman amid elder material on this night. (Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg)
Colbie Caillat Another singer-songwriter with a couple of Grammy wins on her resume (for a duet with Jason Mraz, “Lucky,” and for her contribution to Taylor Swift’s 2008 LP, Fearless), Malibu, Calif. native Colbie Caillat plies a serene, feel-good mix of folk, R&B and pop-rock driven by acoustic guitar and her sunshine bright vocal melodies. Her 2014 fourth album Gypsy Heart features several songs co-written by Babyface, including stirring piano-fueled lead single “Try,” its inspirational femme-empowering diversity-embracing video nabbing the No. 1 spot on the iTunes Video Chart and since its post date last November, earning more than 49 million views on YouTube/Vevo.
