Check out a breakdown of live music highlights for this Sat., Aug. 8.Flat Land with Ajeva, Holey Miss Moley Gainesville’s self-proclaimed purveyors of cosmic funk-pop hit town on their “Foothills Tour,” the four piece’s music drawing on Afrobeat, blues, jazz and funk powered by the rich velvety vocals and magnetic violin work of Fae Nageon de Lestang, who mixes swiped and syncopated bowing with plucked pizzicato solos. A few other groove-vibing locals round out this free showcase – reggae-ska-hued Ajeva and R&B-soulful Holey Miss Moley. (The Amsterdam, St. Petersburg)
La Lucha with Jun Bustamante: Plays 1985! This is no standard Latin-hued, pop-twisted jazz concert by La Lucha, though nothing the quartet does can be considered standard (and they have the Best of the Bay award to prove it). While little information has been leaked aside from the Side Door program’s theme (1985), a recent video clip finds Jun bringing her usual avant swagger to a grooving dub-flecked cover of “I Can’t Go for That” by Hall & Oates. So, yeah, there’s that. I’m intrigued, aren’t you? (Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg)
The Cheaters A supergroup of Bay area lady rockers come together to play guilty pleasure pop tunes by Rihanna, Pink, One Republic, Paramore, Lorde and others as The Cheaters – Halcyon’s Stephanie Callahan (vocals, guitar, harmonica, etc), multi-instrumentalist multi-band-juggling powerhouse Sandi Grecco, and Someday Souvenir’s Tonya Floyd (vocals, keys), Chrissy DeRado (lead guitar) and Stephanie Wood (rhythm guitar, tambourine). The Duppies, The Snails, The Freecoasters, Sketchie A four-pack of high quality bands practicing diverse tones and tempos of ska, rocksteady and reggae dosed healthily in soul, R&B and vintage rock n’ roll – The Snails, from Philly, Gainesville faves The Duppies, Ft. Myers quintet The Freecoasters, and Sarasota’s Sketichie. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Transcendental Telecom with Poster, Fictional Friends Testing, one, two three – Roger, can you hear me? I’m coming through on my transcendental telecom. But seriously, huh? No, it’s not a real thing – it’s a band from Orlando with garage pop that’s vaguely retro and surf-y, definitively influenced by ‘90s indie rock, and bouncing along languidly with masculine-feminine harmonies (the short Facebook description reads, “slack indie surfers ride the jazz chord tidal wave”). This date marks the tail end of Transcendental Telecom’s tour, and features support from a few Lakeland acts, including rising trio Poster; read more about Poster here. (The Bends, St. Petersburg)
