Tonight in live music: Black Tusk

The past dozen or so years has seen Savannah become the breeding ground for high quality metal sounds. Circle Takes the Square, Kylesa and Baronness are all based in Georgia’s oldest city, and swampy, muck-stained stoner metal outfit Black Tusk has made a name for itself there, too. Despite the motorcycle accident that claimed the life of bassist/vocalist Jonathan Athon last fall, drummer Jamie May and guitarist-singer Andrew Fidlar have carried on; Kylesa former/Niche current Corey Barhorst has assumed low end duties and Black Tusk’s fifth full-length – which was completed prior to Athon’s death – is still expected to be released, though no date has been confirmed as yet. This is gonna be a real loud night, perfect for ushering in a sweaty July, presented in collaboration with Southern Darkness Fest, and featuring heavy grime-slinging local ragers Meatwound (which just premiered a track at CVLT Nation), Necrid, and Spar (featuring ex-members of Flying Snakes and Dukes of Hillsborough) warming the standing room stage. (Facebook invite8 p.m. doors, New World Brewery, Ybor City, $12 (ages 18 and up).
