A few stripped-down showcases and a death metal show are the live music highlights on this Thurs., May 21. Some other shows happening tonight included as well...

Florida Folk Scene Showcase No. 35: Flint Blade & Honeydew, The Recycled Citizen, Flaco The next installment of homegrown folk music finds a few locals joined by crunchy South Florida duo Flint Blade and Alison "Honeydew" Murphy; her doleful clarinet melodies prove an intriguing counterpoint to his tapped and plucked grooves on Chapman Stick, a guitar/bass hybrid. The result – with added electronic embellishments and light percussion on 2014 five-song EP Together– is breezy swaying dub flecked in roots and psychedelic flavors and marked by Flint Blade’s off-kilter vocals and conscious subject matter. (Green Bench Brewing Co., St. Petersburg)

Thantifaxath with Imperial Triumphant, Ramlord, Tomb of Ligeia, Bhavachakra Toronto three-piece Thantifaxath plies nightmarish black metal dosed in heavy dissonance, sweeping tension-release progressions, and dramatic technicality, with the unexpected moments of eerie gleaming melody even more menacing amid the resonant gloom. The enigmatic musicians behind the sounds maintain anonymous identities, even leaving out songwriting credits on recordings like 2014 full-length debut, Sacred White Noise, each expansive track given its own bleak titles –“The Bright White Nothing at the End of the Tunnel,”“Panic Becomes Despair,”“Lost in Static Between Worlds,” et al. RIYL: Inter Arma, Deafheaven. (Brass Mug, Tampa)

Singer-Songwriter Night @ The Bunker: Shawn Kyle, Jacob Ferraro-Martin, Laura Watson We don’t get many opportunities to see Shawn Kyle perform live these days, let alone in such an intimate setting as the Bunker, what with his juggling production and engineering projects (like the forthcoming full-length from Have Gun Will Travel and a new solo outing by JT Brown) while criss-crossing the U.S. as frontman of Baltimore-DC area rock band AMFMS. Not sure what he’ll play leading this evening singer-songwriter but I am sure it’ll be finely-wrought, dynamic and well worth the free admission price. (The Bunker @ Tre Amici, Ybor City)
