TUESDAY MARCH 24
The King Khan & BBQ Show Berlin-by-way-of-Montreal duo Arish "King" Khan (guitar, lead vocals) and Mark "BBQ" Sultan (drums, guitars, tambourines, backing vocals) aka The King Khan & BBQ Show have been playing together a few decades, in this incarnation since 1999 with a hiatus/break-up in 2010, where each went off and did his own solo thing until they were drawn back together to record an EP and then, Bad News Boys. The full-length dropped in February and finds their floppy and springy, doo wop-glazed punk-garage, Khan wailing and crooning in his strong tenor while Sultan’s raspier intones join in hoarse harmonies. YouTube their Live on KEXP performance from December, and see what you can expect from these weird dudes in a live setting – circular nipple cut-outs, leather S&M-style masquerade masks, and gold accessories: Khan, a cape, and Sultan, underoos. Rival Consoles with Rude100 Rival Consoles is the performance moniker of London producer Ryan Lee West, who makes “electronic music with some kind of human sentiment.” His bloop-and-beat filled songs swelling with analog synthtones that are cycled through pedals and filters to get to the atmospheric, spacious dancefloor soundscapes he achieves. In the short film produced to coincide with the release of his Sonne EP, he explained that his live practices are very different from what he does in the studio: “it’s the opposite of the finished product, because I completely de-construct the tracks and when I re-arrange them live, they’re never exactly the same.” (Crowbar, Ybor City)–LP
