Here are some of the concerts happening this weekend.
SATURDAY, MARCH 21
Spring Beer Fling 2015 with The Black Lips & more This year’s edition of Spring Beer Fling is dedicated to bring back another super hip band – psych-punk and garage-blues rockers The Black Lips, backing Patrick Carney-produced seventh album Underneath the Rainbow– to headline a lineup of throwback sounds touching on surf, rockabilly and doo wop by local and Florida bands: Jensen Serf Co., The Band in Heaven, The Riot Act, The Woolly Bushmen, Funny Bunny and Johnny Zoom. Seasonal beers, beer cocktails and shandies are served all day while entertainment beyond music includes retro games, rides and activities. (Curtis Hixon Park, Tampa)–Leilani Polk
Chuck Brodsky He’s that Asheville singer-songwriter known for writing odes about baseball and for making clever, cheeky political observations in his lyrical matter outside of “Doc Ellis’ No-No” (about the pitcher who threw a no-hitter while on LSD) and “The Ballad of Eddie Klepp.” He has a warm, soft-spoken, engaging manner and a high-toned nasally vocal timbre. (Craftsmen House, St. Petersburg)–LP
WMNF Presents: Karibbyan Kruze with Impulse, Renegade, Spy v Spy, Nuveau Saka with Cohen, Zuberi with J'Nelle, Bickley & Nelson Rivera, and BXtreme A big bunch of groups pushing island-rooted sounds perform at WMNF’s latest genre-specific showcase. (Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa)–LP
Switchblade Villian CD Release Party with Dead Fender Twin and Treasure Island Switchblade Villain is the new project of Dead Popes former Ray Vega, his deep vocals roaring over rah rah choruses in fast-paced garage punk odes like “Go Go UFO” and “Curse of the Werewolf.” (New World Brewery, Ybor City)–LP
Hub City Stompers The self-styled “ska band for people who hate ska,” proud New Jersey septet Hub City Stompers have been major players in the scene for upwards of a dozen years, separating themselves from the pack by blending brassy skanky sounds with oi!-kicking punk and buoyant bouncing reggae, and penning none-too-serious lyrics about anything from Internet commentators to racism. Rev. Sinister has an anarchic frontman presence and howling vocal quality that is sure to whip the crowd into a frenzy as bolstered by the melodious, spunky support vocals of Janet Whiskey (who occasionally takes the lead and also plays a mean tenor sax). (Local 662, St. Petersburg) –Seth Peterson
SUNDAY MARCH 22
2015 Rock & Roll Swap Meet with Dead Fender Twin, Fowler's Bluff, Los Diablos Blancos, Nerds Raging, Spectraflame, The Trawlers, and Village Of Weedville Roger Peterson’s annual Sunday swap-hawk-and-shop-plus-live-music throwdown is held from 2 to 6 p.m. and features a wide range of rock n’ roll talent, from the punk-kicking ways of Nerds Raging to CL’s favorite purveyors of finely-orchestrated rock songs, Fowler’s Bluff. (Green Bench Brewing, St. Petersburg)—LP
Buffalo Buffalo with Blacksmith and UFO Sex Scene Though only together for about three years, Tallahassee’s Buffalo Buffalo already seems to have mastered their roiling sonic stew of emo, punk and post-hardcore in first full-length Coping Systems, out last July. This gig is supported by St. Pete noise rockers UFO Sex Scene kicks, followed by a dose of ’90s-hued emo from the Tampa-based Blacksmith. (New World Brewery, Ybor City) –Adam Hardy
Vinicius Cantuária An afternoon concert featuring Brazilian jazz and bossa nova guitarist Vinicius Cantuária – who has collabed with the likes of Bill Frisell and Brad Mehldau, and presents a suite of songs by fellow countryman, composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. (Studio@620, St. Petersburg)—LP
