A look at live music happening this Sat.-Sun., March 14-15...

SATURDAY, MARCH 14
Whitney James: Live from New York with Michelle Walker & Emily Braden A trio of up-and-coming vocalists in modern jazz – Tierra Verde’s own James as joined by Braden and Walker, whom she befriended while in New York City – put their distinctive pipes together for an evening of collabs on standards, pop tunes and originals; instrumental support from Per Danielson (piano), Alejandro Arenas (bass), Mark Feinman (drums) and LaRue Nickelson (guitar). (Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg)

Dokken Don Dokken brings his glammy metal group to town and dusts off mainstream rock charters like “Into the Fire” and “Alone Again.” (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)

Journey / Steve Miller Band with Tower Of Power Two heavy hitters of classic rock radio and a brass-blasting superpower birthed from the same general era land in town: Journey with Filipino leader Arnel Pineda belting out tunes like “Don’t Stop Believin’,”“Open Arms,”“Wheel in the Sky” and the like, while Steve Miller Band’s namesake croons and swaggers through his own hits parade –“The Joker,”“Jet Airliner,”“Abracadabra” et. al. Horn-fueled R&B group Tower of Power (“So Very Hard to Go”) warms the stage for both. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa)

The Beach Art Center Fifth Annual Bluegrass Festival with Michigan Misfits, Sawgrass, Gator Grass, Little Girl & The Dreadful Snakes Host of WMNF’s Saturday Bluegrass Show, Cricket, brings together four acoustic acts to benefit Beach Art Center, among them, cheeky ragtime-hued sextet Michigan Misfits and folk-grassy traditionalists Little Girls & The Dreadful Snakes. (Beach Art Center, Indian Rocks Beach)

Adventure Club With a blend of fat blipping dubstep and fine whirring electro-house that soars to buoyant melodic heights and carries delicate vocal pipings, Canadian duo Adventure Club (Christian Srigley and Leighton James) have been charting new territory in the EDM scene, and hit town on the heels of releasing a new remix of MS MR’s “Hurricane. (Amphitheatre, Ybor City)

Can’t Do It (Hiatus Show) / Kyle Chason & The Swindlin’ Hearts (Moving Away Show) Alt country/folk rockers Kyle Chason & the Swindlin’ Hearts are re-locating to Colorado in April. Members Chason and Andrew Mort also play bass and drums, respectively, in ska-punk-metal outfit Can’t Do It, which is likely the motivation behind the latter band’s forthcoming hiatus. Send them off at this BYOB throwdown; warm-up sets by Not For Nothing, Only Monsters, Ten Acres and Ryan Metcalf. (The Nine 10, St. Petersburg)

Teach Me Equals with Adam and the Plastic, Poster With the release of debut full-length Knives in the Hope Chest back in September, Sarasota-based Teach Me Equals offers a hopeful glimpse into the future of avant music. The duo has a wide array of instruments in their arsenal – guitar, violin, cello and a Theremin for added electronic touch – in addition to pedals and other odds and ends used for experimentation, the result coalescing into an avant-garde magnum opus of orchestral, industrial-punk-stained pop. Also on the bill: five-piece Orlando rockers Adam and the Plastic, which gives ’60s-era rock sounds a modern indie twist in latest release Foxholes. Poster opens the evening with some mellow, chillwave grooves. (New World Brewery, Ybor City) —Adam Hardy

RITU∆L with STOIC, LILITH, Infinite Third, DC9V The dark, enigmatic, stylized title of this show plus the types of acts playing it equals a showcase of experimental, electronic-driven, and generally bizarre sounds. (The Venture Compound, St. Petersburg)

Norma Jean with For The Fallen Dreams, Sirens & Sailors, Silent Planet & many more This multi-act metalcore-rooted “Fuel the Passion Tour” is led by Normal Jean, a Georgia outfit that hasn’t released anything since 2013’s Wrongdoers but is working on new material that might make an appearance on this night. (Orpheum, Ybor City)

SUNDAY, MARCH 15
Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band with Have Gun, Will Travel Backwoods Indiana-spawned certified hounds of the road Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band pushes Crisco-fried country blues, the Rev.’s booming lead vocals bolstered by wife Breezy’s aggressive washboard scratchings and drummer Bird Dog Russell’s willful kit bashings, his rhythmic arsenal encompassing a five-gallon hardware-fitted plastic bucket. The trio just dropped an eighth album, So Delicious, on the newly-revived Yazoo Records. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)

Rick Springfield Solo The smoldering Aussie rocker/actor behind such women-fueled scorchers as “Jessie’s Girl,” and “I’ve Done Everything for You” hits town behind a fresh CD/DVD release, Stripped Down, and delivers a similarly scaled-back set of songs and storytelling on this night. (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater)

Concert for Friends of Strays An afternoon of rock n’ blues by Rick Hart Band, Sandy Atkinson & the True Loves, The Lint Rollers, Sarasota Slim, and Ellie Lee & Blues Fury to benefit Friends of Strays Animal Shelter. Visit friendsofstrays.com/wishlist for a list of items needed for donation. (Café Charlie, Clearwater)

When You Wish Upon a Star: Interpretations from the Disney Songbook This program is presented by The [neu] Sonics Orchestra, a “free-conducted, structurally improvising supergroup” of 20-plus Florida musicians piloted by sax player/composer Jamison Williams and delivering avant big-band re-imaginings of classic Disney material. (The Studio@620, St. Petersburg)

Beach Day with FayRoy, Los Demolirs Beach Day doubles down on punk and surfer rock. While the doo wop girl-pop group revival is in full swing, Kimmy Drake’s pipes bring a natural and youthful vibe that cuts cut through the noise. Effortlessly playful Native Echoes is the Florida duo’s second full-length. Beach rockers Fay Roy and Los Demolirs are also on the ticket, offering a more psychedelic and funky approach, respectively. (New World Brewery, Ybor City) —AH

Ol’ Dirty Sundays with Nick Bike The latest edition of ODS welcomes Nick Bike, the 2013 Vancouver Red Bull Thre3style champion who specializes in warm vintage funk and soul studded with disco, breaks and golden era hip hop. (Crowbar, Ybor City)

ASG with Black Falcon, Thomas Hewitt Originally an all-instrumental band focusing on tight guitar riffs, North Carolina-brewed Relapse Records-repped ASG has been a hard rock standout for more than a decade, especially after frontman Jason Shi found his voice. His raw vocal quality paired with the distorted, sun-soaked riffs of guitarist Jonah Citty form a sonic power punch that’ll knock you on your ass and have you back up and begging for more. (The Local 662, St. Petersburg) —Seth Peterson
