BBQ Wednesday Acoustic Series with JW Teller Asheville-by-way-of-Jackson-Miss. singer-songwriter JW Teller (aka Logan Mason) has a low, breathy-sweet vocal quality that wraps around your consciousness like a warm wooly blanket, his guitar strumming through acoustic melodies that, on record, he pairs with the lightest of instrumental trimmings; the tube-pitched hum of harmonica, twangy dropping notes of slide guitar, occasional swells of keys, the found-sound creak of a porch door opening. This Hump Day show is served for free, acoustically, and pairs best with a plate of New World’s smoked-off-the-bone meats and a can of Stiegl Radler – or whatever cold brew you prefer. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Olivia Newton-John The Grease darling is one of those luminary phenomena; producing little of note and mostly absent from the U.S. charts since the 1980s, but maintaining a relentlessly loyal fanbase that crowd into theaters to bask in her Aussie-British glow. She even has her own residency at the Flamingo Las Vegas, though takes a break from that gig to perform two shows (tonight and tomorrow night) in Clearwater. A “Magic Under The Stars” VIP fundraising reception takes place immediately after tonight’s show and benefits the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute and Moffitt Cancer Center. (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater)
The Piano Guys A cello-and-piano-powered project with players that deliver re-imaginings of pop tunes along with the odd mash-up, like the one that propelled The Piano Guys to viral YouTube Fame: a rather intriguing arrangement combining the music of Mozart and Michael Jackson. (Carol Morsani Hall at Straz Center for the Performing Arts, Tampa)
