Five months after a pair of summertime CD release shows, Tampa indie rock duo Brother Cephus have decided to buck normal release trends in the hopes of creating a long term creative outlet for themselves because — let’s face it — the traditional model of writing and then accumulating debt to record and tour behind one full album isn’t exactly sustainable for most outfits.
“Honestly, we just don’t like them,” is what Brother Cephus’ Gabe Davis told CL about CDs. “We want to make every physical release intentional and special.”
It’s that intent that is driving Flesh and Bone Records’ cassette re-release of two EPs, Wounded Hearts: Collections 1&2. The first press is a 50 tape run packaged in silk screened brad packs. Half off them will be red tapes with white imprint, while the other 25 are white on red. The band — which includes Gabe’s brother Seth — hopes to release a new small collection of songs every 3-5 months and is headed into the studio in February to get them on tape.
“Hopefully one day we’ll be able to look back as old men and see the trail of breadcrumbs left behind in the form of Brother Cephus songs,” Gabe added.
The band is playing a cassette release show at The Bricks (1327 E. 7th Ave, Ybor City) on February 5 alongside Tennessee-by-way-of-South Florida trio Civilian. There is no cover and doors are at 10 p.m. More information is available on Facebook. Listen to 1 & 2 below.
