As Showvember starts coming to a close, the concert calendar keeps on swelling, reminding us that our disposable incomes won’t get a break in December or 2015 for that matter. There were a ton of show announcements over the last few weeks — Yellowcard’s makeup for their recent cancellation (April 26, Orpheum), Journey and Steve Miller Band (March 14, The Old Ask Gary — here's a Groupon!), Harry Connick, Jr. (Feb. 13, Ruth Eckerd Hall), Ingrid Michaelson (Feb. 11, Capitol Theatre) — and here are a few more juicy concert tidbits for planning purposes:
A Gainesville-born boy comes back to Florida for a show that is sure to sell out, and if the music on Charles Bradley's 2011 debut, No Time For Dreaming, isn't enough to coerce you into heading to Ybor on January 4, then last year’s Victim Of Love should do the trick. (Bradley, 66, famously came to fame late after years of struggling as a James Brown impersonator.) Have a look at a trailer for Soul Of America, the 2012 documentary about Bradley, below. Tickets to the show at Crowbar (1812 N. 17th St, Ybor City) are $17-$20 and available here.
The mayhem was magnificent at Ty Segall’s once-in-a-lifetime show at Skatepark of Tampa (SPoT), and it looks like the beloved warehouse on 4215 E. Columbus Dr. in Tampa is going for something of an encore when they celebrate their 22nd anniversary on December 6. The show — headlined by Arctic, a psych-sludge-metal-band fronted by professional skateboarder Justin Figueroa — is part of SPoT’s infamous Tampa Am weekend when skaters from around the world converge on the park in the hopes to win one of the world’s most prestigious amateur skateboarding competitions. St. Pete post-rockers Set and Setting, hip hop collective D.E.A. & Saint will play support. Tickets are $10 and info is available here. Watch a short interview with the band below.
Beloved Pinellas rock & roll outfit Tres Bien are long gone, and while they’ve reunited for holiday shows the last two years, that isn’t happening in 2014. Fans longing for a heavy dose of indie-pop over the break will get an early gift though when Los Angeles-based outfit LVLS come to play a free show at CL’s Best Sophisticated Dive Bar, The Bends (919 1st Ave. N., St. Pete), on December 19. The band — based around Tres Bien’s Cody Wilson and Mikey Rollingchild — have released a new track, “You And Me,” which you can stream below.
At age 66, Jackson Browne— along with his self-titled 1972 debut LP — continue to age like fine wine. His voice is still the most melancholy, makes-you-wanna-either-fall-asleep-or-slit-your-wrist, sad sap thing on this side of 1970, but we’re not going to deny our love for it it. He has a new album out (Standing in the Breach, his 14th studio effort), and arrives at Ruth Eckerd Hall (1111 N. McMullen Booth Rd., Clearwater) on February 21 to support it alongside a full band. If you need a reminder that Hundred Waters have come a long way from home, then ask the Gainesville-based band about having to cancel last week’s appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. The reason? The electro-folk outfit were trapped in Buffalo — along with tourmates Interpol — because of a snowstorm that left six feet of the fluffy stuff on the ground. We’re sure the band is excited to make another swing through the Sunshine State on a just-announced tour that stops at the State Theatre (687 Central Ave, St. Pete) on March 11. Finally, a little hip hop. Wale is coming back to Tampa Bay, and while details on a new Nas compilation featuring the 30-year-old born Olubowale Victor Akintimehin are still scarce, there is a new video (“The Followers,” below) to keep you warm until the show at The Ritz (1503 E. 7th Ave., Ybor City) on February 10.
