A new Bill Murray flick —St. Vincent — sees nationwide release next week, and while the whole thing was pretty much shot in the Big Apple, the film’s soundtrack actually has a Tampa Bay connection thanks to local emcee Mark Victor (aka Ca$hizz Klay), who recently inked deals with Interscope Records and Downtown Music Publishing.
The Gaither High School grad’s song “You Da One (feat. Fingaz)” is the fifth of 12 tracks on a release that also features The National, Jeff Tweedy and Bob Dylan. A press release says that the song also runs during the movie when Bill Murray and co-star Naomi Watts are having a “seductive encounter” (schwing alert?). “I never gave up on my dreams and as a result I finally knocked one out of the park,” wrote Victor. “I am truly blessed.” Have a listen to a snippet of the song below. We’ve gushed about Teach Me Equals in the past, and we’re happy to report that the Sarasota-based duo have also discovered their glitz and glam side in a new video for “Coelacanth” that stars Greg Pitts (aka Drew the O-Face Guy) from The Office. The song is the lead single from a forthcoming full length, Knives In The Hope Chest (due Sept. 16). The band’s Greg Bortniak told Diffuser.fm that the song is an “homage to the slim potential of experiencing the miraculous, the implausible, the Delphic even” and Erin Murphy called it “both a tender love song and a sonic depiction of the moment you realize that perhaps it is time to challenge your own reality.” You can hear what that madness sounds like below, but you’ll have to visit Entertainment Weekly to see the video. You can pre-order the band’s debut LP right here.
Rachel Goodrich has been long gone from the Miami art pop scene that gave her a place to cut her teeth, and while sunny south Florida definitely misses her retro, super quirky music, the songwriter seems to be doing just fine in her new Los Angeles homebase. Her band released a new EP in April (Baby, Now We’re Even), and it looks like they’ve been waiting for the spooky season to unleash the lo-fi, filmed-on-VHS clip for the effort’s second track, “Monsta Mash” (via Buzzbands.la). A complete tribute to Halloween and the era of Aquanet, the two-and-a-half-minute clip is directed by Jack Henery Robbins and features special effects that the 8-year-old version of yourself would’ve flipped for. Watch it below.
Now for a little something closer to home. The freshly minted Water Works Park (1719 N. Highland Ave., Tampa) has been contributing to the revitalization of Tampa Heights since it opened in August, and while it’s going to get a workout when Sister Hazel headlines the Rock Brothers River Rock Craft Beer & Music Festival on November 15, it’ll get an even bigger one a week later when a more populous (read: free) festival takes over the grounds exactly one week later. The Tampa Heights Music Festival has the looks of a Big City Events shindig (Facebook posts also promote Margarita Fest, Bourbon & Brews Fest, and Guavaween, which are all run by the Tampa promotions company), and the musical lineup is anchored by smooth jazz saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa (of Rippingtons fame) as well as Miami Latin fusion specialists Spam Allstars. New Groove City, Acme Jazz Garage, and The Gerry Williams Band round out the the event, which benefits the Tampa Heights Junior Civic Association. It takes place from 2 to 10 p.m. on November 22, and general admission is free. Tickets are required though, and they can be acquired along with information about preferred seating and VIP options by clicking here.
