Following a week-long residency on The Late Show with David Letterman, Foo Fighters will premier their new docu-series, Sonic Highways tonight on HBO.
Much like Dave Grohl’s 2012 documentary Sound City, each of the eight episodes will trace the lineage of a legendary recording studio and the music culture of the city surrounding it. At the end of each, Foo Fighters will debut a song recorded at the respective studio with the whole thing culminating in an album by the same name, set to be released on November 10.
Studios in Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington D.C. and New York are all featured as the Foo Fighters hang out, interview and record with artists who’ve called these places home over the years. Everyone from Rick Nielsen to Chuck D., Zac Brown, Ian Mackaye, Dolly Parton and plenty more show up throughout the show, which you can watch a preview of below.
Like most HBO programming, Sonic Highways will surely be an original and compelling draw. The recording-our-new-album element feels a little contrived (especially with quotes like “It’s a chronicling of a journey to unravel our musical identity.”), but if anyone can pull it off with a modicum of respect, it’s Grohl — a rare guy in rock whose massive success only seems to make him more grounded and likeable.
