There are some who still don't know that Pinellas County is fertile ground for rock music that makes your ears ring while leaving you begging for more. New releases from two of the area's best should clear up any confusion for good.

Jensen Serf Company (JSC) released their new EP, New Kid Shot, online last week just moments after receiving the masters in the mail.

"Get it to the people fast as possible," JSC singer/drummer Benjamin Saylor told CL in a message. The four-track EP clocks in at just seven minutes long, but in typical JSC fashion, each is overrun with the energy of a nuclear reactor gone haywire. A live track ("Shotgun") was recorded at secret show, and the rest was literally put to tape (read: analog) by the band before being handed over to Stephen Bowman and TC Smith at St. Pete's Paper Sound Studios. The final product was supposed to be on a 7" release. That never happened, which probably worked out for the better.

Saylor, 21, and guitarist Peter Kokkinakos ended up taking the tracks to another St. Pete studio, Yoko Phono, where Alexander Charos (of The Grapes and Talk Nice notoriety) helped JSC spice them up by adding more vocals and reworking some guitar parts. There's even another drum track on the manic title track, and Happiness Machine's Kathleen Arnal provides extra vocals on "Break The News."

"Alexander helped out a lot in the recording process," Saylor, wrote. "He's a great dude, and super easy to work with."

You can stream New Kid Shot above. There are currently no plans for a physical release, but digital purchases do come with two bonus tracks — an acoustic version of "Break The News" plus a quasi-electro noir instrumental track featuring two drum kits "He Likes To Sleep, Sometimes He Even Has Good Dreams." If you must have JSC vinyl, then grab a copy of a new 12-inch EP, Triple Freaks A Beach, on limited clear splatter vinyl. They play the Don't Stop St. Pete Festival in two weeks and then open for North Carolina rock madmen Paint Fumes on November 7.

CL is all up in Zulu Wave's drawers as of late, and we're not afraid to admit it. They took home the "Best Live Show" award in our recent Best of The Bay issue, and music editor Leilani Polk recently gave their debut full length Jagorilla a nearly-perfect rating in her review, noting that the title track "confirms they aren’t fucking around with the rocking out" while adding that the "nine tracks, on the whole, manage to paint a rather vivid aural picture of what Zulu Wave can do live, no easy feat in a studio setting."

Have a listen to the whole of Jagorilla below. Vinyl should be in by the end of the year, and you can grab a copy on cassette by contacting the band directly or catching them at their next gig, which is this Saturday at the Plan B Block Party in Ybor City. You can purchase a digital format via Bandcamp.
