I'll admit that I was a little worried when I walked into the House of Blues and saw the stage decked out in giant baby bottles. Lily Allen's new album is a strange dichotomy of self-conscious mom and bad-ass bitch, and the decor had me worried that I was going to be seeing only one side of things.
Those fears were immediately quelled when she came out in an American flag catsuit, a sequined varsity jacket, backed by four hot support dancers. She started with the title track from the new album, "Sheezus," a girl-power anthem with a verse touching on the monthly cycle, and went right into "Not Fair," a song about a really nice guy who sucks in bed. Hoorah! It was still the tough Lily I fell in love with so long ago.
Sure, she talked about missing her husband and kids, but she also told us about her Spanx g-string giving her camel toe. The show even found her doing a costume change midway through, into a sexy two-piece adorned with colorful baby bottles. I love mommy Lily, and the whole place erupted in flying birds, the middle-digit kind, when she performed the crowd favorite "Fuck You" to end the main set.
But we hadn't seen anything yet. In a nod to performing on Disney property, Lily strutted out for encore wearing a crushed velvet Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) dress, pink Minnie ears, and green platform stripper heels she picked up in Miami, rolled up to the mic, and grinded out a cover of the rather filthy "Or Nah" by The Weeknd. She may be a mom now, but she's still a badass mother, too.
