Ty Segall with Wand, Jensen Serf Co. This show has been so hyped up and tickets moving well enough that it’s been moved from Epic Problem into SPOT’s own indoor park. Indie rock darling Ty Segall is a prolific musical force who came jetting out from the San Francisco underground with a relentless barrage of recordings, in bands to start, then solo beginning in 2008 with his self-titled full-length debut. He’s issued an album every year since (including 2014 latest Manipulator, which dropped a few weeks ago on Drag City) and a slew of 7” singles as well as collabing on albums with Mikal Cronin and White Fence. He plies a fuzzy-grungy blend of post-garage, psychedelia and noise rock that is particularly captivating on his eighth and latest, deserving of all the glowing buzz it’s drummed up over the past few months. Support act Wand is the project of Victoria, BC musician Derek Janzen, whose tripped-out guitar-crunched synth-zipping rock seethes and rages under hazy trailing vocal melodies. A pre-show party is held from 4 to 8 p.m. at Epic Problem and features two Miami bands – Plastic Pinks and The Gun Hoes – along with Gainsville’s UV-TV, and Bay area acts Orange Forest and Sonic Grafitti. Nu,Pogodi! with Ratsak, Landbridge, Fevers Nothing like a free (donations to the band, please) DIY bill featuring an overseas band: the UK’s d-beat/grindcore outfit Nu,Pogodi!, which is named for the Soviet/Russian animated series of the same name but has a disparately serious tone to the crusty thrashing music off 2014 album The Absence Of Darkness Has No End. Also of note: hardcore punk quartet Ratsak, from Wisconsin. (Planet Retro, St. Petersburg)
Method Man & Redman with AMiAM The rapping and cheeching duo – the former of Wu Tang pedigree, the latter associated with Def Squad – have been collabing since the mid-1990s and put out two full-length albums together, The Blackout! (1999) and 10 years later, The Blackout! 2, not to mention starred in and produced the soundtrack for classic weed-toking cult film, How High, in 2001. By all accounts, Method Man & Redman put on a hazy blazing live show, and Jannus is the perfect platform for it… (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)
Bernard Allison with Walker Smith Group Allison is a blues rock guitar slinger with roots in Chicago and Florida, a current homebase in Paris – where he recorded his 1990 debut and remained through the 15 albums that followed – and got his axe training from the likes of Koko Taylor, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan and late dad Luther Allison. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)
Rewind Tour 2014: Rascal Flatts with Sheryl Crow, Gloriana Since 1999, Rascal Flatts has been producing twangy tunes that have taken Ohio’s harmonizing trio from Ohio to the top of the Billboard Country charts a dozen times. Their current “Rewind Tour” supports a ninth studio LP of the same name and features warm-up from Sheryl Crow, who went from Memphis blues to Nashville twang on her own ninth album, 2013’s Feels Like Home, ranked by Billboard as one of the 10 best country albums of last year. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheater, Tampa)
WMNF 35th Birthday Bash with New Groove City featuring Gumbi Ortiz, The Black Honkeys Hats off to Tampa Bay’s community-supported radio station, which celebrates doing its independent thang for three-and-a-half decades this September. The birthday festivities are meant to get feet moving and hips shaking with two high-quality locally-based musical acts: New Groove City with Gumbi Ortiz brings tropical conga-driven tunes with Afro-Latin rhythms to the evening, while The Black Honkeys stir up the crowd with brass-blasted funk, soul and R&B jams. Birthday cake, a Listener Awards ceremony, photo booth, drawings and a performance by the winning band from WMNF’s New Sounds of the Left Coast competition roudn out the evening.
