Brass Mug Things go in cycles, and the North Tampa venue that helped the city earn the title of Death Metal Capital of the World in the early ’90s is once again on the rise. While the focus is on metal, the Mug is and always has been open to multiple different styles, so long as there’s a loud guitar in there somewhere, and in its heyday hosted touring punk and alt-rock acts in addition to more metallic fare. Pegasus Lounge More than one great rock act came of age in a strip-mall bar, and tons of Bay area acts have done so at the Pegasus, a North Tampa local-scene touchstone that’s been around for more than a decade. More biker-y than dive-y, the Pegasus has earned a reputation as a place to see both ultra-new acts on their way up and some of the most stylistically diverse bills in town. USF Sun Dome The home of USF basketball moonlights as a formidable music arena. A $35.6 million renovation in 2012 did wonders for the venue; its capacity increased to 10,000, new strategically poised speaker clusters benefited its sound system, and fresh acoustical panels added a welcome finishing touch to the upgrades. National tours often make stops at the Dome, giving students and the Tampa populace alike a chance to see highly coveted acts like The Lumineers and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. 4202 E.
