It's Friday!! Some music happening tonight that you might want to know about. A breakdown of the highlights below.
Cookie Monsta Evoking childhood nostalgia with his stage name but delivering an entirely adult brand of EDM is UK producer/DJ Cookie Monsta (aka Tony Cook), whose electro learning started with on his brother’s Playstation, continued in college with music technology studies, and ultimately grew into a bona fide career that finds him dropping synth-grimy, snare-slapping, wobble bass-banging dubstep onto dance floors around the world, including this one-off date from the “Zomboy Outbreak Tour,” which comes this way on August 1. (Amphitheatre, Ybor City) –Leilani Polk
American Idol Live Now that the 13th season of the hit reality singing competition is over, the top 10 belters take to the road to give fans a live dose of American Idol in the flesh. Hard rocking Ashville-bred winner Caleb Johnson leads the pack, with a locally beloved highlight in the form of Bradenton’s own Sam Woolf. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater) –LP
Little Sheba & the Shamans with Hairdresser on Fire A Friday-night Ella’s lineup featuring two bands practicing vintage sounds: R&B/garage rock quintet Little Sheba & the Shamans, driven by the robust femme howls of Ari Little; and rockabilly/jump blues/surf trio Hairdresser on Fire. (Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café, Tampa)–LP
The Wholetones This Naples-based folkcore group brews up an all-organic blend of bluegrass, folk and jazz with some occasional spontaneous elements of metal. They formed in 2007 when Taylor Freydberg (vocals, guitar, harmonica) and multi-instrumental Alex Dorris met at a local bluegrass jam. Currently, they’re joined by bassist Russ Depa and drummer Mayo Coates. The opening cut off latest album The Alamo (2012) glides along “North 41” with full-bodied drums and airy cellos, only to toss you into a folky tornado of banjos with the second track. They’ve accumulated a loyal Central Florida fanbase since issuing 2010 debut Clutch Life and have continued to feed their eclectic musical appetite. (Ale and the Witch, St. Petersburg) –Jackie Braje
Suenalo The self-styled “Afro Latin baby-making descarga funk family” hails from Miami and encompasses nine members — including an emcee/singer, female vocalist and two-piece brass section blowing sax, flute, trombone and even conch — who combine the pulsing percussive-fused sounds of Cuba and Puerto Rico with elements of reggae, rock, hip-hop and funk. Suenalo (which means “To sound, slap, or play upon a musical instrument, object, or person”) has released four albums, the most recent this year’s Keep It Groovin. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa) –LP
Thomas Wynn & The Believers with The Black Cadillacs, Redfeather It’s like deep-fried Southern soul with a side of rock ‘n’ roll on a plate of visceral open-chord deliciousness. Thomas Wynn & The Believers is a six-piece Orlando-based ensemble driven by the gritty, smoky vocals and passionate lyrics of siblings Olivia and Thomas Wynn along with a full, lush background of smoldering bass, harmonica, keys, tambourine and drums. They’ve been voted as Best of Orlando’s #1 Rock Band every year from 2009 to 2013, and rightfully so. Bluesy indie-rock sextet The Black Cadillacs is heavily influenced by groups like The Rolling Stones and Black Keys. Also playing is Redfeather, a mindful, earth-loving psychedelic folk group from St. Pete. (Crowbar, Ybor City) –JB
