Late last week, L.A. DJ duo N.A.S.A. and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O dropped a solid rendition of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff," which was teased in that Sonos commercial during this year's Grammy Awards.
Carried by N.A.S.A.'s shimmery disco-era beat a la Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," the cover keeps a delicate balance between doing the original justice and adding an entirely new spin to it. Karen O's unmistakable delivery gives the whole thing an eerie late-night vibe that plays perfectly to "I Shot the Sheriff"'s dark lyrical themes.
In an age where Bob Marley covers are often relegated to old white guys jamming on the back patios of overpriced beach bars and dread-locked trustafarian dorm rooms, it's nice to hear a solid interpretation of one of this reggae legend's most ubiquitous hits.
Karen O previously lent a hand in covering another timeless classic when she teamed up with Trent Reznor to cover Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo back in 2011. Like her collab with N.A.S.A., it is also pretty excellent.
