It's been a good morning for fans of Drakes. Both the Toronto-based emcee/singer (Drake, real name Aubrey Graham) and the late English singer-songwriter Nick Drake released new music, and the tunes are — as to be expected — worlds apart.
The posthumous song from Nick comes to us as a result of an unfinished songwriting session with fellow folkie Beverly Martin, who told the Independent that she and Nick wrote it just a few months before he died in 1974. The tune —"Reckless Jane"— was left unfinished, but Martyn put the final touches on the uncharacteristically sunny song as a tribute to her friend.
“I couldn’t even think about the song for so long because it brought up so much pain," she told the British newspaper. "It took a while to finish after that point.”
Hip-hop star Drake came to find his tune —"Draft Day"— in another way all together. The five-minute homage to the NBA and NFL drafts takes its sample from Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop" and, as The FADER points out, pays a heavy tribute to former Texas A&M quarterback/Drake idol and BFF Johnny Manziel (who has caught the eye of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers). The track also name drops recently NBA draft eligible Kansas Jayhawk Andrew Wiggins while working in references to entertainers like Chance The Rapper and the Hunger Games' Jennifer Lawrence.
