A community-oriented program that sheds reverent musical light on the past while looking at the ripple effect it’s had on the present, Sounds of the Civil Rights Movement: The Power of Song brings together an ensemble of singers, musicians, dancers, spoken word artists and storytellers, mostly from the Bay area, in a multi-media production reflecting on the history of the songs that drove the movement and their continued impact on modern music. The multi-media production is directed and produced by singer, songwriter and scriptwriter September Penn; she co-founded the nonprofit Power of Song Inc., its goal to educate and bring continued awareness about the Civil Rights Movement and social justice via song, theater and art. Sounds is the official launch for St. Petersburg’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service and its King Weekend Celebrations; it’s also a food drive for the Everyday Hero Project’s efforts to restock St. Pete food banks. 7 p.m. Palladium Theater, 253 Fifth Ave. N., St. Petersburg, 727-822-3590, free admission.
