A few days before Taylor Swift is due to fill up Raymond James Stadium on her last date in the U.S. touring behind 1989, two of her band members are set to speak at Palladium Theater this evening as presented by St. Pete College's Music Industry/Recording Arts (MIRA) program.
Brooklyn-based pianist/composer David Cook has a jazz background and is active in the NYC underground jazz scene, though he's pretty versatile and before his tenure serving as music director and keyboardist of Swift's band (which started in 2014), he played with Lizz Wright, Natasha Bedingfield, Marianne Faithfull, Jennifer Hudson and David Guetta, among others, while his time with Swift has allowed him the chance to perform with the likes of James Taylor, Carly Simon, Usher, T.I., Jennifer Lopez, Tegan & Sara, Tim McGraw, Nelly and Ed Sheeran. Amos Heller has been Swift's bassist since 2007; he came up in the Cincinnati music scene, working with artists such as Ric Hordinski (Over the Rhine, Monk), Phil Keaggy and David Wilcox, re-located to Nashville in 2005, then toured or recorded with Josh Gracin, Rhett Akins, Mindy MacCready, and finally, Swift.
Both will be on hand to give a talk and Q&A with students, area professionals, and any members of the community interested in getting some behind-the-scenes insight on the Swift tour before it hits Tampa Bay. Among the topics expected to be discussed: performance skills that have allowed them to thrive in the industry, personal branding as musicians, and their gear choices for recording and live performance.
The talk takes place tonight (Thurs., Oct. 29), at 7 p.m., at Palladium Theater, 253 5th Ave. N., St. Petersburg; admission is free. For more info, call 727-341-4360. For a list of upcoming SPC-related events, click here.
