Anais Mitchell She’s been hailed as the new queen of modern folk rock, given the seal of approval by Ani DiFranco herself (and signed to that venerable artist’s Righteous Babe Records label), and she has five LPs to her credit that range from the Orphean “folk operetta” of 2010’s Hadestown (which featured guest appearances by DiFranco and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver among others), to last year’s grab bag, xoa, composed of re-imaginings of old tracks that didn’t work on previous efforts, her own takes on songs performed by others on Hadestown and some new material that had a serene lullaby appeal. (Jaeb Theatre at Straz Center for Performing Arts, Tampa)
Streetlight Manifesto with Dan Potthast, Sycamore Smith Hitting town on the second leg of their current “Last Good Fight Tour” come New Jersey’s favored ska-punk sons Streetlight Manifesto, which haven’t released any new material since 2013 but can still pack a venue with their brass-blasted sounds. The septet surveyed fans to find out which “oldies but goodies” they’d most like to hear played this tour around, and the songs that got the most votes (“We Are The Few,”“If And When We Rise Again” and “What A Wicked Gang Are We”) have been dusted off and shined up for the road. From the band’s Facebook page: “When you hear them at a show in the next 2 weeks, enjoy thinking ‘I helped make this happen,’ right before being elbowed in the stomach by a person in a banana suit. Unless you voted for a different song, in which case, sorry, your opinion is wrong. But it may be right next year!” (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)
