It's a stacked Friday, as least as far as live music goes. Check out what's happening on this 9th day in October below, and peep what's coming up this weekend, too.

King Dude with Fois Gras, New Cathedral So maybe Seattle's Thomas Jefferson Cowgill swapped metal for folk-blues, but his output as King Dude is Southern gothic and disturbing, deep vocalizations gurgling, groaning and belting through narratives dealing in dark matters of the heart and spirit. It’s less like something you’d hear on a backwoods dirt road and more like what might be playing if you dashed into the woods to get away from the inbred heathen on your heels. He told The Guardian that he was trying to make "the most horrifying music I could" on last year’s Fear, and ostensible title track “Fear Is All You Know” is packed with plenty of doom. This year’s Songs of Flesh & Blood – In The Key of Light is just as morose but has faded feathery tendrils of light pushing through the murk. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)

Big Sean If ever there was a rapper who shot to super stardom in what seemed like a rather short span, it’s Big Sean. He started dropping mixtapes in 2007, at a mere 19 years old, but he really picked up steam in 2011 with debut full-length Finally Famous and charters like “Dance (A$$),” then guest spots on a couple of rap hits, “Mercy” (No. 1) and “Clique” (No. 2) from Kanye West’s Cruel Summer comp in 2012. He’s continued to peak, most recently with bumpin’ hip hop kiss-off “I Don't Fuck with You” with E-40 and “Blessings” featuring guest verses by Drake and Kanye, the latter track off 2015 third full-length Dark Sky Paradise. (USF Sun Dome, Tampa)

Toro Y Moi with Astronauts, Etc. While pretty much every indie act seems headed in a dance-tronic direction, Toro y Moi (the project of North Carolina native Chaz Bundick) seems to be returning to his Underneath the Pine roots, i.e., live instrumentation; lots of guitars, grooving clavs, bass, drums. It’s almost like he traded molly for LSD and took the material on fresh fourth album What For? into an unexpectedly heady direction, leaving some Bee Gees-evocative disco appeal intact but adding heavy infusions of funkadelia. Read this week's story here. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)

The Vibrators with Chris Barrows, Treasure Island, Switchblade Villian Grinding out fiery punk rock odes since 1976, first wave UK outfit The Vibrators were originally led by the gruffly yelping, shouting and snarling antics of Ian "Knox" Carnochan, but he left the band in 2011 to pursue a solo career and his replacement has since departed, too. Remaining original drummer John 'Eddie' Edwards has carried the Vibrators flag as part of a three piece ever since, sharing vocal duties with longtime guitarist Darrell Bath and back-up from bassist Pete Honkamaki. The trio hits Fubar – a pretty rad (small) venue to see such a venerable act – behind last year’s Punk Mania: Back to the Roots. (Fubar, St. Petersburg)

Dog Fashion Disco with Psychostick, Megosh Likely way ahead of its time when it burst onto the still grunge-coated scene in 1995, Dog Fashion Disco crafts dark avant garde metal with traces of psychedelia, jazz, alt rock and circus music, heavy guitar-shredded odes like "We Aren't The World" (off 2014’s Sweet Nothings) marked by ominous saxes and woodwinds and mood-setting synths and organs that, all together, take on a carnival weird hue, while the vocal qualities vary from growled whispers and barks to sinister low-toned chants and hoarse roars commenting on a willfully anesthetized populace. Dog Fashion Disco just released Ad Nauseum, the second album that’s arrived since the quintet reunited after a seven-year hiatus. (Orpheum, Ybor City)

New Kingston with Lov’d Ones A free, all ages reggae show headed up by Brooklyn-bred brothers-led R&B-fused trio New Kingston, with support from Orlando’s progressive roots reggae ensemble, Lov’d Ones. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

Boxcar Hollow Presents: Music For The Kids Roots-spun grassy-kicking folk rock quartet Boxcar Hollow headlines and hosts this charity event to benefit the Children's Cancer Center, with warm-up from America's Got Talent singer-songwriter alum Johnny Shelton, a silent auction and raffle with thousands of dollars worth of donations. Tickets are $18; formal attire is required. (Hideaway Café& Recording Studio, St. Petersburg)

30th Anniversary: Dukes of Juke featuring Late Night Brass Dukes of Juke were originally founded back in ’85 by singer, saxophonist and harmonica player Bobby Rose, and have been persistently active in the three decades since, playing everywhere from small smoky clubs to giant festival stages. Though the lineup has altered slightly over the years, the music has remained a tight and practiced brand of rhythm and blues dosed heavily in jazz, funk and rock n’ roll sonic hues, with setlists touching on tunes by Southside Johnny, ZZ Top, Al Green, Booker T, Randy Newman and the Blues Brothers, among others. On this night, the seasoned musicians (Rose, drummer Kyle Campana, guitarist Roger Casey, keyboardist Dan Hill and bassist Pat Peterson) mark a 30th anniversary year milestone with an added horn section by way of Late Night Brass and vocal support via Freight Train Annie. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)
