This New Tunes Day is a particularly exciting one, with four rather fantastic bands all dropping new singles and videos, and most confirming new albums on the horizon. Tortoise, "Gesceap"
I got pretty damn excited when I saw "Tortoise Returns with a New Album" in the subject line of an email I received this AM. The venerable instrumental post-jazz rocktronic quintet from Chicago (made up of multi-instrumentalists Dan Bitney, John Herndon, Doug McCombs, John McEntire and Jeff Parker) hasn't released any new material since 2009's Beacons of Ancestorship, and finally deliver a seventh LP, The Catastrophist, on January 22 via Thrill Jockey Records. The inspiration started in 2010 when the City of Chicago commissioned Tortoise to compose a suite of music rooted in its ties to the area’s jazz and improvised music communities. The five loose themes were then used as the lift-off point for the tracks on The Catastrophist, where "moody, synth-swept jams like the opening title track cozy up next to hypnotic, bass-and-beat missives." Guests include U.S. Maple/Dead Rider’s Todd Rittmann and Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo, who lend vocals to two of the tracks. Debut single “Gesceap” (below) morphs from two intertwining synth lines into a pulsing frenzied full-band climax.
Wild Belle, “Giving Up On You”
Another Chicago act, art pop duo Wild Belle, have just dropped this video for the sexy dance-punk track "Giving Up on You," directed by Alan Del Rio Ortiz (St. Vincent, Danny Brown, Blood Orange) and featuring "The Era" dance troupe busting some fine moves. According to Natalie and Elliot Bergman, "“we wanted to bring together all of our friends and shoot in our hometown, Chicago. We assembled the best of Chicago’s thriving Footwork and Vogueing scenes ... This song is a celebration of getting free. Letting go of poisonous habits, and breaking the cycle of toxic love. We threw a 12-hour party where people could lose their inhibitions. Everyone was welcome. We were inspired by The Clash, Liquid Liquid, Gang of Four, ESG. 1970s Punk Rock ..." The track itself is the lead single off their upcoming album (due out in January, 2016 via Columbia Records), it was produced by Dave Sitek (TV On the Radio), and it sounds gooooood.
Bloc Party, "The Love Within"
Yesterday, the UK post-punk revivalists premiered this new song off a forthcoming, as-yet-untitled fifth album due for release in early 2016. Heavy on the weird effected synths and bumpin' dance beats, light on lyrics, and intriguing, if not terribly catchy at first.
Lettuce, “Phyllis”
A favorite of the jazz-funk jam scene with their full-bodied grooving and spirited live show, NYC's Lettuce are gearing up to issue their fourth studio album Crush, and premiered first single "Phyllis" on Consequence of Sound, the track marked by hip hop production, a stealthy hip shaking beat, spidery guitar work and doses of tight brass. According to drummer Adam Deitch, “Phyllis” embodies “a chill-hop vibe that’s kind of the flip-side of all that powerful uptempo funk that people might expect from us.” Lettuce plays Hulaween at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park on November 1. New album release date is still TBA.
