A decent lineup of live music happening this Sat., Aug. 22. Take a look at some highlights below.Funkfest If we’re really nit-picking here, this ‘Funkfest’ bill doesn’t actually feature any true-to-form funk acts but several artists that charted R&B, hip-hop and New Jack Swing hits in the ‘90s and early ‘00s. Heading up the bill are a few vocal quartets with sweet and sexy charters – the K-Ci & JoJo-powered Jodeci (“Come and Talk to Me,”“Forever My Lady”) and Dru Hill (“How Deep Is Your Love”). Other highlights include catchy track-making rapper/producer Trick Daddy (“Thug Life,”“Nann Nigga,”“Take It to Da House”), known for his collabs with sassy rhyme-slinging Trina; nasty hip hop purveyors 2 Live Crew (“Pop That Coochie,”“Me So Horny,”“Banned in the U.S.A.”); and gospel-hued girl group SWV, which put out several love songs (“I’m So Into You,”“Weak” and the MJ-riffing “Right Here/Human Nature”) before breaking up in ’98; their reunion has been documented in an unscripted WeTV reality series, SWV Reunited, that just finished its second season. Soul Saturdays A new ongoing soul music series hosted by St. Pete songstress Danielle DeCosmo that spotlights new guests each month. The August edition brings the big band jazz sounds of the Tampa Bay Sax Quartet to the Hideaway stage, along with DeCosmo’s own folk-soul outfit Blackbird Morning. Shroud Eater with ULCER, BeerwolF, Servants of the Mist, Bullethorn Keep the sludge and doom alive and writhing in Miami since 2009, Shroud Eater’s metal odes are propelled by the raw throaty vocals and fuzzed-out guitar-bass assault of frontwomen Jean Saiz and Janette Valentine, with the group’s solitary male member unleashing all his testosterone in hard-pounding rhythms that speed hard or creep ponderously. The trio hits town on the heels of dropping a two-song EP, Face the Master. (Brass Mug, Tampa)
Tim McGraw with Billy Currington, Chase Bryant On his current “Shotgun Rider Tour,” country music behemoth Tim McGraw is backs his 13th studio LP, Sundown Heaven Town, his tour named for the steel guitar-fused third single and wife Faith Hill’s favorite track off the album; it’s also his 36th No. 1 Country Songs charter. Warm up from country upstarts Billy Currington and Chase Bryant. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa)
Up Close & Personal with Shaun Hopper An intimate (only 85 tickets available) event that kicks off with a meet-and-greet with the local finger-style guitar sensation followed by a set of his original instrumental compositions and covers by artists ranging from main influencer Chet Atkins to The Beatles. (The Amsterdam, St. Petersburg)
Monday Monday: 60s Flashback A group of local music makers – singer-guitarist Michael Taylor-Powers with vocalists Liz Hollister and Cindy Campione, The Ditchflowers’ Ed Woltil (vocals, guitars), The Vodkanauts’ John DeBellis (bass) and Tommy Kennedy (drums, percussion) – have pooled their talents and four-part harmonies to stage this variety show-style flashback to the ‘60s. The program, “spiced with humor and historical snippets,” is rooted in material by The Mamas and the Papas (“California Dreamin’,”“Go Where You Wanna Go”) but also touches on hits from other era acts (CSNY, The Byrds, The Beatles, et. al). Osprey Underground Once a month, during the full moon, Tampa Bay fans of underground house and techno music gather at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge (the rest area, ya’ll) to get down to pulsing and pounding electro jamz from sunset to sunrise. This edition of Serious Soul finds HPC resident and Skyway regular Brian Busto recreating the same “Osprey Underground” vibe joined by a few other regular Skyway party DJs – Uncle Tone and Richard Morykon. That Pack Moscato’s, the downtown St. Pete restaurant that serves traditional Southern Italian cuisine, boasts a rather classy, low-lit basement bar (yes, you read that right) and a small slightly raised stage where Lounge Cat leader Eddie Rosicky has been booking talent for the past few months. The Underground has the potential to be a pretty damn cool live music hotspot, but for now, it’s all about getting the word out. Music on this night by That Pack, made up of trumpeter James Suggs and jazz vocalist Bryan Hughes. (The Underground at Moscato’s, St. Petersburg)
The Atlas Moth with Vattnet Viskar, Atriarch, North, Set and Setting About seven years into its existence, Chicago post-metal quintet The Atlas Moth blends elements of doom, stoner and psychedelic styles to create its own mesmerizing, idiosyncratic heavy sound. A cult favorite, this is the group’s only Florida stop on this tour, and should be drawing devoted fans from around the state. A great chance to not only see some uniqute metal (along with area fave set and setting), but also to meet some folks from other scenes. (Orpheum, Ybor City) –Scott Harrell?
