Thee Oh Sees John Dwyer is one prolific son of a gun. He and his San Francisco band, Thee Oh Sees, have issued an album a year since 2008 (with two in 2011), and even a brief hiatus in 2013 couldn’t keep ‘em down for long; a few more LPs have followed since their full-steam-ahead return in 2014. This year’s Mutilator Defeated At Last maintains their time-tested formula of mixing fuzzy ‘60s-hued psych-garage rock with snotty modern art punk, all driven by Dwyer’s brassy yelps and dreamier croons. Thee Oh Sees inspire fervent devotion, and this show will most assuredly sell out well in advance; get your tickets stat. Sept. 18, Crowbar, Ybor City.
José González The Swedish singer-songwriter and finger-style acoustic guitarist crafts restrained, exquisitely melodic folk songs that are like a dose of musical Xanax with a heavy measure of heart-squeezing tenderness by way of his clear, elegant, high-toned vocals. Gonzalez issued his first solo album in seven years, Vestiges & Claws, this past February, its subject matter revolving around ideas of civilization, humanism and solidarity. “In general I think that the lyrics are clearer this time, and a little less self-pitying,” he commented in his official statement. Sept. 29, State Theatre, St. Petersburg.
Chance the Rapper Though only 22 years old, the Chicago-spawned hip hop artist has been drumming up a mighty buzz since dropping his 2013 mixtape, Acid Rap, which was diamond certified after being downloaded more than 1 million times on DatPiff.com. That outing served as an introduction to Chance the Rapper’s serpentine flow, mix of rapped and sung verses, and intellectual idiosyncratic subject matter ranging from eating LSD to racial politics. It hasn’t been confirmed whether this date coincides with Surf, his 2015 release as a member of jazz-fused group The Social Experiment (led by Chi-town trumpeter Nico Sega), but we’re keeping our fingers crossed. Nov. 5, Jannus Live, St. Petersburg.
