The Sheepdogs, "Downtown"
Canadian boogie rockers The Sheepdogs are definitely channeling Lynyrd Skynyrd down to that band's warm vintage classic rock sound in bluesy driving "Same Old Feeling," the first single off forthcoming fifth album Future Nostalgia (out October 2 via Dine Alone Records). But, I can't fault 'em; sounds pretty good. And the official lyric video below was apparently produced to look like the video for "Crosstown Traffic" by Jimi Hendrix.
Diplo x CL x RiFF RAFF x OG Maco, "Doctor Pepper"
Not sure if I like this track, so much as I am a fan of Diplo, and can usually count on RiFF RaFF to amuse with lines like "No tint on the glasses ... Col. Sanders." CL is new to me — a South Korean recording artist who assumes her best badass-ittude in for this video, not to mention a rather skanky dye job. Put it on ice, bitch, Dr. Pepper...
Monogold, "Orchard Beach"
Today, I was introduced to (and am in turn, introducing you to) Brooklyn trio Monogold, which use live instrumentation (guitars, percussion, vintage organs and pianos, an assortment of woodwinds and brass, a harp) to get to the lush layers of prettiness you hear in "Orchard Beach," a warm, breezy, ethereal tune with pristinely harmonic chorals. Apparently it's a departure fro their signature shoe-gaze/psych-pop sound, but from what I can hear, it's a rather fine one. New full-length Good Heavens is released this Fri., Aug. 21,
DRINKS, "Hermits on Holiday"
DRINKS is the project of English/Welsh songstress Cate Le Bon and White Fence's prolific Tim Presley. “...let’s do something different. Let’s start a band, make it exciting and not obvious,” Presley told the LA Weekly in June of their decision to collaborate. The track is marked by Le Bon's distinctively accented and dulcet sweet coos, and almost seems like it's not really going to do much of anything until the weird bouncy instrumentals kick into gear, though it's still rather minimal. Hermits On Holiday drops this Fri., Aug 21, via Birth Records / Heavenly Recordings.
Hot Chip, "Started Right"
And finally, my favorite UK electro pop band released a video for my favorite track off their new LP, Why Make Sense?, which I am still on the fence about. Might be a little too polished for my taste, but "Started Right" has a few of the elements I love so much off their 2004 debut, Coming On Strong. Fun video, too. ALBUMS OUT THIS FRIDAY, AUGUST 21
