Slightly Stoopid with Dirty Heads, Stick Figure California-spawned reggae rock outfit Slightly Stoopid lands in St. Pete with the “Everything Is Awesome Tour,” their trademark sound infused with extra doses of percussive funk, dub grooviness and ska-dancehall bounce in just-released eighth studio album, Meanwhile...Back at the Lab. Two other fellow Cali-area acts provide warm-up: melodic beat-hawking Dirty Heads (purveyors of sticky Alt Rock charter, “My Sweet Summer”), and Stick Figure, the reggae-dub project of Scott Woodruff. No telling if this will get rained out, considering the weather this past week, but hopefully if there is a wetting, it will only be temporary and the show will go on as usual... 2015 Suncoast Blues Society Challenge SBS holds the solo/duo round for its contest to determine which acts will represent the organization at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis this January, 2016. Six Bay area acts are set to compete; show starts at 5 p.m. (Hideaway Café& Recording Studio, St. Petersburg)
E.N. Young It’s possible that E.N. Young has the nattiest dreads of any white dude this side of the Mississippi. I can’t verify whether the same goes for the other side – there’s definitely more hippie-rastas per capita in his native San Diego. His roots-reggae rock sound matches his heady look, driven by the eerie strains of melodica that glide amid swaying grooves and in between Young’s high-toned vocals. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
Sealion with Pleasures, Rogerthomas featuring Tony Mozz Closing down the weekend at New World is Dallas-based surf-punk outfit Sealion, their fast-chugging fuzzed-out lo-fi jams marked by vocals that balance scratchy masculine howls against melodic feminine coos and sultry drones. Sarasota’s Pleasures (led by Sons of Hippies former Katherine Kelly) adds robust synth-and-guitar-fueled experimental rock to the night’s sounds. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
