A breakdown of live music happening this Sat., June 27.Turbo Fruits with Panther Camp, Sonic Graffiti April saw the release of the fourth and latest album from Nashville’s wildly frenetic indie garage pop foursome Turbo Fruits. No Control finds Fruits-approved topics (women, alcohol, friendship, being on the road) approached with a decidedly more personal and mature point-of-view than previous efforts, the usually infectious hooks paired with tighter instrumentals and a tighter, more focused and sophisticated stylistic quality overall. Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra Making his annual stop to serenade Bay area folks with his easy blend of New Age jazz and Spanish influences come prolific German nouveau flamenco guitarist/composer Ottmar Liebert, who put out two LPs last year: three-oh-five features the usual relaxed explorations with extra electric guitar, while Bare Wood is a comp made up of pieces created between 2002 and 2012, re-imagined in completely acoustic form. Your Pest Band with Old Vices, Russ Van Cleave Your Pest Band hails from Tokyo, Japan, and assails with raw, high-energy catchy-snotty punk-garage rock odes, their original material littered with covers like NOFX’s “Punk Guy” and “Please Mr Postman” by The Carpenters. (The Bends, St. Petersburg)
Direwood presents: GEMINI A night of Venture Compound appreciation, fundraising and “mind-blowing audio visual freakouts” headed up by the glitchy, gettotech-infused hip hop of Direwood along with Joe Suel, aka RaeF, an electro-vibration experimenter from Sarasota. Breakdown with Criminal Instinct, Blistered, Hardside, Three Knee Deep, Hardwired, Society Abuse, Crisis Unit Leaders of the ‘80s-era New York hardcore resurgence Breakdown infused their sounds with more metal and cheekiness than their sonic brethren, and have been sporadically active in various formations (all led by Jeff Perlin) since their formation, aside from the years that Perlin moonlighted with the Slumlords. The original 1987 lineup (Perlin with guitarists Carl Porcaro and Don Angellili, bassist Rich McLoughlin and drummer Anthony Drago) reunited in 2012, and have been working on new material in the midst of touring. This is their only Southern date on the current run. (Crowbar, Ybor City)
For the Benefit of Mr. C: Steve Connelly Benefit with Steve Connelly & the Lesser Gods, Ronny Elliott & the Nationals, Bogus Pomp, Grey Market, Mercy McCoy, Rebekah Pulley & the Reluctant Prophets, Ricky Wilcox & the Moonsnakes, Rich Whitely & Co, Offshore Riot, Sara Rose Band, Peace of Woodstock, Dirty Spoons & Trash Revue Nearly a dozen acts have banded together to perform in support of Steve Connelly, a linchpin of the local music scene who’s had a nasty run of luck these past several months. The much-called upon sideman and lead producer/engineer/owner of Zen Studios has helped innumerable area acts record albums, including all the ones playing this bill, not to mention slinging live guitar in bands ranging from The Headlights to his current Lesser Gods. Soul of America A collaborative presentation by Florida Grammy showcase winner ALEX and Studio@620 Artistic Director Bob Devin Jones, held in honor of African-American Musical Appreciation Month, and pairing the works of literary writers with acoustic performances of songs by Sam Cooke, Al Green, Otis Redding and Percy Sledge.
