Who knew the Quad City DJs had so many fans? I thought the Hip Hop ABCs Letter Q would be a race between Queen Latifah and Q-Tip, but this Jacksonville-based duo with a heavy Miami bass sound stole the spotlight.
Just kidding.
Queen Latifah, who I have a definite crush on, was surprisingly bested by the group that brought us the mid-1990s dance classic “C’mon N’ Ride It,” but they were nowhere near as close to getting as much love as Q-Tip. With 73 percent of the votes, this emcee and producer adds the Hip Hop ABCs Letter Q to his award tour.
Born Jonathan Davis and sometimes known as the Abstract Poetic, Q-Tip is responsible for solo hits like “Breathe and Stop” and “Vivrant Thing.”
He is best known for his work with Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White in iconic group A Tribe Called Quest. Together, they achieved both critical acclaim and financial success while contributing greatly to hip hop’s golden era. Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders are timeless albums. Q-Tip continues to contribute to the genre today mainly through his production work, but sometimes by letting the under-informed newbies know what the deal is. Besides producing for A Tribe Called Quest, his credits include artists ranging from Mobb Deep to Mariah Carey.
Now, we tackle the Letter R, but feel free to hit the comment section below and weigh in on which names you think should be included in the list for the Letter 'S'...
