From Strange indie hip hop to ethereal psych rock, there's several intriguing shows happening this Thurs., May 28. Take a peep at the breakdown below.
Rittz, KXNG CROOKED, Horseshoe G.A.N.G. A Georgia-raised hip hop artist with a wild poof of ginger hair, Rittz earned support from fellow Southern rapper Yelawolf during an important career turning point (he appeared on 2010 Yelawolf track “Box Chevy”), issued a White Jesus mixtape that earned him representation from Tech N9ne’s Strange Music label, and has since dropped a few official LPs that put his low-toned quicksilver flow front and center. On this current “SouthXWest Kings Tour,” Rittz joins KXNG CROOKED, the California rapper and Slaughterhouse member formerly known as Crooked I, who backs a new mixtape-style album, Sex, Money and Hip Hop; it features a guest spot by another group on the tour and fellow Long Beach natives Horseshoe G.A.N.G., made up of four brothers who also happen to be the biological siblings of CROOKED. (Crowbar, Ybor City)
This Is Not a Band, We Call It Monday A group of local friends and music makers who’ve been gathering every Monday to play together (including Including Hot Rod Hornets drummer Frank Baptie, and Studio co-founder Dave Ellis on vocals) bring their jam sessions to the public; setlists are comprised of originals and sundry folk and rock covers by Dylan, Decemberists, Jason Isbell and others. (Studio@620, St. Petersburg)
Jackson Scott with Selectric, Poster “Ripe for Love”– the second single off Jackson Scott’s sophomore LP, Sunshine Redux– is an odyssey of sounds, opening with static-clung quiet before transitioning into lushly orchestrated yet lo-fi instrumentals driven by unexpected tempo changes that start at a dreamy, trippy crawl, speed up to a hasty vintage rock shuffle n’ sprint before easing back into warped, lazy-ambling psychedelia; Scott’s high tinny register utters la-la’s and coos and high-pitched, ethereal melodies, or whining, sing-songing and crooning verses over his instrumental washes. First single “PRPlMTV” proves just as gorgeously wrought. The Asheville-based song-maker stirred a bunch of buzz when he dropped his debut on Fat Possum at age 20. This year’s kaleidoscopic follow-up, at 22, is deserving of some acclaim as well. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
The Story So Far with Four Year Strong, Terror Fresh on the heels of releasing an eponymous third studio album, The Story So Far bring their heartening pop-punk to town in support, as joined by a like-sounding act that also has a self-titled full-length out in 2015 – Four Year Strong; it’s their fifth overall. (Orpheum, Ybor City)
