For many, music festivals are just socially acceptable means of escaping civilization and doing a bunch of drugs in the woods with friends, which isn’t anything new or interesting. What is interesting is this fresh study from drugabuse.com (via Stereogum) detailing which drugs are the most popular at 15 major music fests across the world.
By scouring Instagram posts sent from the aforementioned festivals, researchers were able to get a very ballpark estimate of the substance-du-jour at big name festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo, Electric Daisy Carnival and more.
Many of these are wholly unsurprising — coke reigns supreme in the haute crowds of Coachella, Marley Fest loves its marijuana and psychedelics win by a long shot at Burning Man. Crack cocaine is apparently a thing at music fests, which makes sense given the endurance these events require, but it's still kinda baffling. What kind of crackhead A) makes a public posts about their crack use on Instagram, and B) has enough extra income to shell out $500-plus on a trip to a music fest and not, say, more crack?
Either way, the whole "study" is pretty unreliable, since many festival-goers are smart enough not to post about their illicit activities on Instagram, or at least tap that “private” button before they do so. Some might argue that they could just be quoting lyrics, or making shit up, but come on, who really lies on the internet?
