The Ting Tings with Kaneholler The UK multi-instrumentalist pop duo came up on the U.S. charts in 2008 with percussive, stomping rah-rah anthem “That’s Not My Name” and followed it with the more groove-oriented, Blondie-influenced dance ode “Shut Up and Let Me Go,” the snotty vocals of frontwoman Katie White (guitar, bass drum, keys, cowbell, hand-claps) underscored by the deeper tuneful intones of compadre Jules De Martino (drums, vocals, guitar/keys). The Ting Tings have released a few albums since the debut that spawned both ear-wormy singles. The latest, January’s Super Critical, was produced Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor and embraces the Ibiza party spirit that jolted them from a period of creative inactivity into disco domains á la bass-bumping singles “Wrong Club” and “Do It Again,” White’s piping coos matching the breezy upbeat dance vibes. Seven Lions Jeff Montalvo is the remixer, producer, instrumentalist and composer otherwise known as Seven Lions, which he uses to build electronic epics breezing through vocals-driven electro and progressive house territories rinsed in trance-dance sonics and making detours into chilly, fuzzed-out dubstep realms. Samantha Fish with TC Carr & Bolts of Blue The latest upstart blues slinger to making rounds on the circuit — and regular stops in Tampa Bay — is Samantha Fish, who’s only in her mid-20s but has already built up quite the rep for her sultry vocal quality and slide-guitar chops that extend from her custom Delaney electric “Fish-o-caster” to a Stogie Box Blues cigar-box guitar. Setlists include original material along with howling and raging covers of songs like Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” and Tom Petty’s “American Girl.” (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa) —LP
Lauris Vidal with The Dugans, Big Blu House Quick! What do you get when you mix blues, folk, reggae and punk? Not blupulkae. But close. You get none other than Florida-raised Lauris Vidal. He calls it “kitchen sink beat blues,” and he has a plethora of instruments at his disposal, including banjo, ukulele, cigar-box guitar and lap steel among others. Vidal is known for his eclectic delivery and exuberant live performance; punknews.org likened the experience to getting a hug from Tom Waits at a Paul Simon concert. Lita Fordwith Faster Pussycat The former Runaways guitarist turned lite-metal goddess inspired legions of young female musicians while she was ushering in the erotic awakening of countless adolescent rock dudes. We all know her from “Kiss Me Deadly” and Ozzy duet “Close My Eyes Forever,” but there’s plenty more where that came from, depending on your appetite for hair-band nostalgia. One of the better second-tier Sunset Strip acts, Faster Pussycat learned from the old, dirty Aerosmith’s mix of blues stomp and innuendo, and learned well.
